Vegetarian Protein Sources for Indian Meal Prep
The Vegetarian Protein Challenge
Hitting 150g of protein a day can feel daunting on a vegetarian diet without relying entirely on whey protein shakes. Fortunately, Indian cuisine offers a vast array of vegetarian proteins.
Top Vegetarian Protein Sources
1. Soya Chunks (Nutrela)
Soya chunks are arguably the most potent vegetarian protein source available, containing over 50% protein by weight. They act like a sponge, absorbing curries and spices beautifully.
2. Lentils & Legumes (Dals, Chana, Rajma)
Chickpeas (Chana), Kidney Beans (Rajma), and various Dals (Toor, Moong, Masoor) provide roughly 8-9g of protein per cooked cup. While not complete proteins on their own, pairing them with a grain (like rice) forms a complete amino acid profile.
3. Dairy (Paneer & Dahi)
Paneer and yogurt (dahi) are staples. Greek yogurt in particular is phenomenal for meal prep, offering a thick texture and high protein content for marinades or raita.
4. Tofu (Soya Paneer)
While historically East Asian, firm tofu works incredibly well as a leaner paneer substitute in traditional Indian dishes like Palak Tofu or Tofu Tikka Masala.
Combine and Conquer
The secret to vegetarian meal prep is combining these sources. A meal featuring Soya Bhurji, a side of Dal, and a dollop of Greek yogurt can easily surpass 40g of protein.
