How to Choose a Weight-Loss Meal Plan
The Science of Weight Loss
Weight loss fundamentally relies on one mechanism: a Caloric Deficit. You must consume fewer calories than your body burns. However, not all deficits are created equal. A diet consisting only of 1200 calories of potato chips will cause weight loss, but it will ruin your health and muscle mass.
Criteria for a Successful Meal Plan
1. High Protein Content
Protein is the most highly thermic macronutrient (your body burns calories just digesting it) and the most satiating. A good weight-loss plan should provide at least 1.6g of protein per kg of your body weight to preserve muscle while losing fat.
2. Volume Eating (Fiber)
Hunger is the enemy of diets. Look for plans that include high-volume, low-calorie foods like leafy greens, broccoli, and robust vegetable curries. Fiber keeps you full.
3. Sustainability and Taste
If you hate the food, you will quit. Boiled chicken and broccoli works for a week, but authentic, spiced, portion-controlled Indian food works for a lifetime.
